Alpena’s “Little Red” Lighthouse
The Alpena Light, an 80-foot skeletal tower at the Thunder Bay River’s mouth, is best viewed from the City Marina. Known as “Sputnik” or “Little Red,” this unique lighthouse was built in 1877, rebuilt in 1888, and reconstructed in steel in 1914. An active navigational aid, it originally housed a Fourth Order Fresnel lens.

The park is located along the paved Bi-Path trail which encompasses the city. Indoor restrooms are nearby. The park is within walking distance of the downtown district which offers shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Besser Natural Area & Ghost Village of Bell
Besser Natural Area & Ghost Village of Bell, 14 miles north of Alpena, offers a peaceful one-mile trail through the former Village of Bell. Explore building remains, a stand of white pine trees, a lagoon, sandy beach, and the nearby shipwreck of the Portland off Bell Bay.
Blair Street Park
Blair Street Park, located on Lake Huron’s shore, features a grassy picnic area, sandy beach, and a wooden boardwalk pier. It’s a peaceful spot to relax, enjoy sunrise views, or bird watch. Perfect for a serene afternoon by the water.
Bruski Sinkhole
The 2.5-acre Bruski Sink, located near Leer Rd. and Maple Lane Rd., about 20 minutes from Alpena, was once an unauthorized dumpsite. After a nine-year cleanup starting in 1999, debris like cars and farm machinery was removed with the help of a 75 ft. crane. The sinkhole’s depth increased from 85 ft. to 115 ft., improving water safety and offering visitors a clearer view of its size. For more details, visit the Alpena Visitor Welcome Center at 420 N. Chippewa Hills Pathway, located 20 miles southwest of Alpena, offers over 14 miles of scenic trails through wooded terrain with hilly elevation changes. Trails are groomed by the Thunder Bay Trails Association and marked with maps.
